About Viable Number

What is a Viable Number?
A Viable Number is a genuine telephone number that provides the functions and benefits of a real phone number that looks and works exactly like a hearing person's phone number. All Viable Numbers are local, free, and real.

Why should I get a Viable Number?
A Viable Number allows you to receive all calls at your videophone and have access to 911     emergency response:
Receive VRS calls from hearing people without special dialing instructions
Receive videophone calls from deaf people beginning in 2009
Make true 911 emergency VRS calls with their location information pre-stored in Viable's     database

Is it free?
Yes, there is no cost to register for a Viable Number.

When can I get my Viable Number?
Anytime! It became available to the public as of November 25, 2008. You can sign up for your Viable Number here!

Registering

Can anyone sign up for a Viable Number?
Only deaf and hard of hearing persons who live in the U.S. are eligible for a Viable Number.

Can I choose my local number?
Yes! You can choose from any area code we have available and from any available number you like from our list of numbers.

Can I request an 800 number?
We will be making toll free numbers available in the near future.

Can I request a vanity number (i.e. 240-IAM-COOL?)
Yes, but not through Viable. You can order a vanity number from a company that distributes personalized telephone numbers then you can transfer it to Viable and it will work right away!

Can I get an international Viable Number?
We offer only telephone numbers with U.S. area codes.

I registered but have been waiting for an e-mail with my Viable Number!
It takes few hours to process your registration and make sure all your personal information is registered in our databases. If more than a day has passed and it says in MyViable that your number is still pending, feel free to contact Customer Support .

Making calls

My Viable Number is a local number... will I have to pay long distance charges?
No, you will not have to pay any long distance charges even if you make calls to people in other states or to people out of the country.

Will the hearing caller see my Viable Number on their caller ID?
Yes, your Viable Number is a real number and will show up on caller ID machines. This also makes it convenient for them to call you back and have their call automatically route through ViableVRS.

Receiving calls

What happens when a hearing person calls me at my Viable Number?
It doesn't matter if the hearing person has a cell phone or a landline phone. When the hearing person dials your Viable Number, the phone call will automatically go through ViableVRS and connect to you at your videophone.

What happens when a videophone user calls me at my Viable Number?
It doesn't matter which videophone the other person is using. When your Viable Number is dialed, the videophone call will connect to your videophone just like any other phone call.

Will your Viable Number be the only way people can contact you?
You still will be able to receive calls at your IP address and at your Viable Screen Name. Your Viable Number is another option for people to contact you.

Will people who call me pay long distance charges?
You will not pay any long distance charges but hearing callers may be charged for long distance calls. An alternative is for hearing people to call ViableVRS directly for free by dialing 877-842-2531 (877-VIABLE-1) and give the Video Interpreter your VSN. The Video Interpreter will then connect to you and interpret the call as usual

Will my Viable Number work with other VRS numbers that I already have on my       videophones?
Yes, your Viable Number will work. Each telephone numbers you have is assigned to a specific port to ensure that you are still able to receive calls.

Transferring your Number

Can I transfer my Viable Number to another videophone and still receive calls using       ViableVRS?
Yes, please contact Customer Support for the latest information on how to transfer your number to another videophone.

I already have a phone number from another VRS company... can I transfer it to Viable?
Yes! If you prefer to use ViableVRS, you can transfer your telephone number from any other VRS to Viable. Please contact Customer Support for the latest information on how to transfer your number.

Can I transfer other types of phone numbers (landline, wireless, mobile) to Viable?
Yes, and the procedure will be exactly the same as with transferring your VRS number to Viable. Please contact Customer Support and we will help you.

Will there be problems with 9-1-1 calls if I transfer my number to Viable?
When you transfer your telephone number to Viable, you will need to allow a few hours for processing. We will make sure that we have your current location information to ensure that 911 emergency response will go smoothly.

I have to pay a monthly fee for a telephone number. If I transfer it to Viable, will I have to       continue paying the monthly fee?
No, you will not need to continue paying for anything when you transfer your number to Viable.
