Viable Opens Call Center in Western Pennsylvania

ROCKVILLE, MD – February 5, 2009 – Viable, Inc., a provider of video relay services (VRS) for deaf and hard of hearing people, will open a call center in Greensburg, Pa., which is located 45 minutes east of Pittsburgh and is the county seat of Westmoreland County. This marks the first call center Viable is opening in Pennsylvania.

"We are excited to be coming to the Keystone State," said Vice President of Technology Jason T. Yeh, who is deaf. "The state has a large, vibrant deaf and hard of hearing community and I look forward to building partnerships and developing resources that will benefit everyone."

In a VRS call, deaf and hard of hearing people for whom American Sign Language is their native language use video technology to connect to a Video Interpreter (VI), who will dial out to another party then interpret their conversation.

VRS calls are beneficial for deaf and hard of hearing people who need to make calls to or receive calls from family members, co-workers, healthcare providers, and businesses. People can call ViableVRS through a variety of connection options:

  • Via dialing ViableVRS.tv on any videophone
  • Via one-click connection on the VPAD, a videophone developed by Viable
  • Via one-click connection with Viable Vision for the PC
  • Via dialing ViableVRS.tv using XMeeting for the Mac

Viable is headquartered in Rockville, Md., and has call centers in Maryland and Texas along with partners throughout the country. "Our expansion to Pennsylvania will benefit ViableVRS customers throughout the country," said Alan Abarbanell, who manages Viable's national call center operations. "The increased operational capacity enables ViableVRS callers to continue experiencing fast response times for their calls."

The Greensburg call center will be operational in March 2009 and employ up to 20 interpreters. Viable is scheduling interviews with candidates for VI positions and the position of call center manager at TerpExpo, taking place in Baltimore February 19 through 22. Persons interested in opportunities with Viable are welcome to email their resumes to jobs@viable.net or visit the Jobs section at the company website.

About Telecommunications Relay Services
Mandated by Title IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, telecommunications relay services (TRS) enables individuals with hearing or speech disabilities to achieve functional equivalence by accessing telephone systems to place or receive calls through an intermediary known as a relay operator or relay interpreter. Emergent IP technology has given rise to video-based solutions, which are known as video relay services (VRS). VRS options include using a webcam or a videophone to connect to a video relay interpreter, and allow deaf and hard of hearing callers for whom sign language is native to fully achieve the ideal of functional equivalence.

To place a VRS call: From any videophone devices, dial viablevrs.tv.
